While Lesley’s studying at an ashram in India, her husband Crayton is guest-posting. Please be kind to him.
First off, India was a blast, and I’m not going to say a whole lot more about it because I know Lesley will have lots to tell you. I can confirm she’s arrived safely at the ashram, and I can’t wait to see how it goes for her.
(OK, one India- and cooking-related thing and it’s a total SPOILER ALERT for this blog – I got through Mexican airport customs screening with our entire inventory of recently acquired weird Indian spices and teas and stuff. This is great news, since the Mexican customs agents can be somewhat arbitrary about confiscating stuff, like the time they took Lesley’s quinoa because it was “seeds.” Do you know what this means? It means that Lesley will have all-new strange ingredients to experiment with! And she will inevitably put them in tacos! Stay tuned.)
So now here’s our chance to talk amongst ourselves. Over the next couple of weeks, this blog will have much less in the way of food-related content and probably a good bit more about beer and sports. But I’m open to suggestion! Any specific male-perspective-type questions you have about Mexico?
Amanda
I think I will miss her exciting and well written posts on food but I am interested to see your perspective on Mexico. My husband is Mexican and grew up here so aside from a few things being here is just normal for him. We do like beer though and cant get much of anything in our town so that sounds like something Id be interested in reading. And if you put some good stuff about sports Ill be sure to alert my husband. Glad to know she made it safe Im sure she is so relaxed right now.

Crayton,
What kinds of beer can you get in Mexico? How many of these can you ONLY find in Mexico and not the US? Should you have a giant taste test while Lesley’s gone and see which one is the best? I think that you should.
Crayton
I think this past year has been one giant beer taste test for me, but yes, beer post definitely is on the way.

Hi Crayton, any super bowl excitement there or is that only when the Cowboys are in it (which hasn’t been in a while)? Good to see a large community of people live and work in DF with no dire happenings. My aunt and uncle live there and give the opposite experience. We had a layover once in DF on our way to puerto vallarta and they wouldn’t let us leave the airport even to walk around (my aunt and uncle) – said we looked too touristy and would immediately get mugged. They came to us at the airport and we had a nice lunch. i’d love to go there again for a cooking class vacation – looking forward to your posts!

Hey Crayton,
What do you know about Mariachis – specifically their clothes. I want to get a Mariachi suit with the coins on the pants and the little bolero jacket. We walked around to the little tailor shops around Garibaldi Square one year and tried to ask about it (in broken Spanish). The ladies at the shops either pretended that they couldn’t understand a thing that we were trying to get across or gave me the impression that you had to prove that you are a card carrying Mariachi to be allowed to get the clothing. Any idea?
Scooter
By the way – that name should be “Scooter” not “Scoter”. Damn technology…
travlingirl
hey Scooter – you can get all things mariachi here too –

Crayton
Scooter, you have given me a great challenge. I’ll see what I can do on the mariachi suit front. I think your Garibaldi idea was a good one. Wondering if mariachi suit access might be easier in Guadalajara, where the tradition has its roots.
But I’ll check into it.
Travlingirl – yes, the Super Bowl is a big deal here. It wouldn’t been an even bigger deal if Mark Sanchez or Tony Romo had made it to the big show, but it will nonetheless be a much-viewed event. I’ll have some more on this later on.
Leslie Limon
Hi Crayton! Lesley often writes about her favorite foods that she’s discovered in Mexico. Maybe you could do the same thing! 😀

I’ve got a question: What the hell are you going to eat for dinner while Les is away? All carry-out all the time or back to your bachelor cooking roots?
Crayton
I cooked when I was a bachelor?

Garage hotels seems like a macho topic, no?

Crayton
Hm. Yes. I need to be careful on that one though.

Without getting you into trouble, how about a guide to the single guys life in el DF?
Crayton
Ha, I’m pretty sure I wasn’t a very good source on that even when I was single. Now I’m totally lost. I think all my good friends here have a girlfriend at the very least. But let me think about it. Maybe I could find an outside expert.
